What do we do?

Llanedeyrn Primary School follows the National Curriculum for Wales.  We incorporate the Core Subjects, with the foundation to offer a wide and balanced curriculum, which is differentiated according to the pupils needs.

Language and Literacy

Language development plays an important part in the teaching programme in all subjects across the curriculum.  All pupils follow a basic course in reading using established reading schemes.  They read in groups, one to one and at home.  They enjoy "Big Book" and other aspects of the  Cardiff Achievement in Literacy Strategy (CAL), which promotes their skill and development as independent writers in a variety of genres.  Literacy activity

Mathematics

Maths activity Daily Math's lessons enable the children to fulfill their potential through carefully graded work.  We use a combination of mental tasks, investigation and formal number work (including tables) to develop a sound base of mathematical skills for each pupil.  Teaching at Key Stage 2 is based upon recognised National Schemes with added material from other sources.
All classes implement the numeracy strategies as employed in the Cardiff Achievement in Numeracy Project.  Great emphasis is placed upon the children's computational skills and mental ability.

Science

Science (including Health Education) is taught in all classes.  Pupils follow a carefully designed Science Scheme of work for each Year Group.  The Science lessons are planned according to CELIPS (Cardiff Effective Learning in Primary Science) - a project which the school has actively been involved in, which has greatly enhanced the quality of teaching and learning in Science, together with the range of opportunities afforded to the children.

The Science Curriculum is further enriched for the pupils by:
  • Providing opportunities for educational visits to Techniquest.
  • Visits to school from Scientists from Techniquest, XL Wales Roadshow and guest speakers.
  • Participating in practical Science activities and competitors in Science Week.

Information, Communication Technology

Each class has its own computer, networked and with internet access.  Each P.C. has a variety of software appropriate for the year group and set of topics.  The children quickly become proficient and confident  using a wide range of IT skills.

We also have a computer suite with interactive whiteboard and digital projector, timetabled for use by all the classes in the school.

The development of the network of all PC's in the school including those in the Computer Suite, combined with the introduction of broadband, has resulted in great improvements in ICT across the curriculum.

Religious Education

R.E. is taught within the guidelines issued by the Local Education Authority.  We have daily Collective Worship to promote a sense of self awareness and belonging.  Every class has weekly R.E. lessons, and we aim to develop an awareness of religious, spiritual and moral attitudes for each child. Welsh

Welsh in the school environment In order to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum, Welsh is taught as a second language by each teacher.  Emphasis is placed on developing incidental Welsh through oral work, action rhymes, vocabulary and phrases.  Every day greetings and commands all add to the development of incidental Welsh and the inclusion of a Welsh perspective in all topics studied, helps to further enhance Y Cwricwlwm Cymraig.

Foundation Subjects

The foundation subjects (Music, Art, History, Geography, Physical Education and Design Technology) are also part of our curriculum.  When combined make a broad and balanced weekly timetable, which is why learning at Llanedeyrn Primary School is such an enriching experience.
